Kayaking & Canoeing

THE WILDERNESS

Cold Waters from the Great Smoky Mountains

If you have your own canoe or kayak, we offer parking for a fee so that you and another driver can shuttle between the Island and location where you start or end your float.

View an aerial view of the Float Trip Map for launching from Perry’s Dam in Walland, TN.

Getting on the water takes planning – play it safe and check the water levels on the USGS | National Water Dashboard  and check the weather forecast before you head out.

The Trip Down the Little River

From Perry’s Mill Dam to River John’s down the river is approximately 7 1/2 miles. For those who are set on paddling straight through the trip, you can make it in 3-3.5 hours. Most people take a little longer and enjoy stopping from time-to-time along the river.

There are rope swings over the river in some places, but we caution you to beware. And, if you do use the swings, you will be doing so at your own risk.

Taking a snack or lunch and stopping to eat on the riverbank is enjoyed by some. So again, whatever your pleasure… just be careful.

The Little River 'Pace'

The major portion of the river you will be traveling is calm and serene (class I rapids – easy). Then we have the occasional places in the river where small rapids can be quite thrilling. If you are looking for rapids which are dangerous in nature, then this is not the kayak or canoe trip for you.

Just about anyone of any age can make this trip and have a great time doing so. We cater to those whose pace on the river is a little slower and want to enjoy the river, its banks covered with flora and fauna, turtles, birds, and the occasional glimpse of other wildlife.
